The Advantages of Living Right
So much of the book of Proverbs is saying, in essence: Here’s what will happen to you if you choose the wrong path, and here’s what you will gain by living God’s way. Take the long view. Consider the consequences. Ultimately, the sinner hurts himself. The one who lives right helps himself.
► “A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself…. Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live, but he who pursues evil will die” (11:17, 19).
► “Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin” (13:3).
► “An evil man is ensnared in his transgression, but a righteous man sings and rejoices” (29:6).
► “One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor” (29:23).
Here are two good reasons to live right: 1) you will spare yourself a heap of avoidable grief, and 2) you will enjoy the good things God has in store for those who make wise choices.
Immorality carries a high price tag (5:1-14; 6:24-35; 7:6-27). The one who stubbornly refuses to listen is asking for trouble (29:1). Laziness leads to poverty (6:10-11; 10:4-5; 24:33-34). Drunkenness destroys the drinker (20:1; 23:29-35). Dishonesty backfires (15:27; 19:5, 20:17).
On the other hand, generosity blesses the giver (3:9-10; 11:24-25; 19:17; 22:9). Righteous living obtains God’s favor (3:5-6, 33; 10:6; 12:2; 15:9). Wisdom brings a reward (19:8; 24:14). The person who guards his tongue will not regret it (13:3; 21:23).
