How the Church Enriches Our Lives
Christ knew exactly what He was doing when He built His church the way He did. He created it to be a spiritual family of brothers and sisters, united under a common Head. There’s nothing quite like it in all the world.
The longer we are members of His body the church, the more clearly we can see His wisdom in arranging it as He did. For one thing, Christ knew we would need teaching, and lots of it. Instruction is a major function of the church (Matt. 28:20; Acts 2:42; 2 Tim. 4:2 -4). Thank God for the lessons the church provides —may we learn them well!
We can see His wisdom in giving the church a work to do and in giving each of us specific gifts for doing that work. Not all of us are good at the same tasks (1 Peter 4:10 -11). But put all of our strengths together in an organized effort, and great things can be accomplished! We can accomplish so much more together than we could have ever done by ourselves.
We see His wisdom in designing the church as a mutual encouragement society (Heb. 3:12 -13; 10:24 -25). Since we are all striving for the same goal —heaven — and since Satan will do his worst to defeat us, we really
do need each other to overcome. “There is strength in numbers.”
So much more could be said about the value of the church, but we would do well to respect the plan He gave us for the church and not think we can improve on it, and to work the plan He gave us by finding our place of service and filling it well.
In view of what Christ was willing to pay for the church —His own blood (Acts 20:28) —how can we do anything but value it highly and be the very best member of it that we can possibly be?
