Bucking the Trend
Herodias deeply resented John the Baptist for telling the truth about her marriage to Herod. She resented him to the point of having his head.
In this increasingly secular age in which we live, it has become quite unacceptable to take a stand against certain moral evils. For example, those who dare to object to taking God’s beautiful gift of sex outside the marriage bond of a man and woman are branded as bigots.
While it is possible to oppose sin in a self-righteous or mean-spirited manner, it is also possible to oppose sin out of a sincere concern for the spiritual welfare of others.
One reason for the current mood in our nation is the declining belief in biblical authority. That is, as fewer and fewer people recognize the Bible as God’s authoritative standard for our lives, the more unwilling our society is to accept direction from the Scriptures.
If our nation is to be pulled back from its follow-the-crowd slide to destruction, there must be an increasing number of people who will have the courage to stand up and say, “Hey, wait—this isn’t right!”
Before these protests are dismissed as just so much narrow-minded hate speech, there needs to be a careful examination of all God has said on these issues—from marriage to abortion, from homosexuality to creating confusion in children’s minds about their God-given gender.
A study of the founding documents of our nation makes it clear that this country was built on a belief in God as our Creator and on the Bible as His Word. How far we have drifted from those convictions, and the drift is accelerating at an alarming rate.
By rejecting our biblical roots, we have cut ourselves off from the source of what was once so great about America. Much of what ails us as a nation could be cured by a wide-scale turning back to the Book of the Ages and to the God who made us all.
“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34 NASB).
