Today
As I write this in early morning, I wonder what the day will bring. Will anything particularly unusual happen? Will the day go well or poorly? Will I feel good about this day when it’s over, or will I be disappointed? God only knows
It may be a truism, but it bears repeating: today is all I have. I cannot afford to dwell on the successes or failures of yesterday. And tomorrow when it comes will be “today” when I experience it. So today is it.
Today I can waste my time with trivial pursuits, or I can make it count for something. As the day progresses I will have opportunity, if the Lord wills, to touch the lives of others for good. Perhaps the Lord can use my efforts to open others’ eyes to the greatness of God, the wonders of His goodness, the need for repentance, and the blessings of obedience. If so, then my day will not be wasted.
Procrastination is an ever-present temptation. I must resist it. Since I don’t know if I’ll have another opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life, then today becomes crucial indeed. I must act now. Certainly I cannot do everything calling for my attention; I must give priority to what matters most.
So with the rising of another sun, may I not say, “So what?”—but rather, “So what can I do today that will help someone?” Today is bursting with potential. I must stand in awe of the opportunities this day brings.
“Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity. Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person” (Colossians 4:5-6 NASB).
