“Will God Always Bless America?” (Part 2)

Is there any hope for our country?

The only thing, THE ONLY THING, that can save America is a widespread, heartfelt turning back to God. This turn must include genuine, life-transforming repentance. Our nation must do a 180—and SOON!

Now let’s consider a highly significant principle that shows how God responds to nations:

“At one moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to uproot, to pull down, or to destroy it; if that nation against which I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent concerning the calamity I planned to bring on it.

“Or at another moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to build up or to plant it; if it does evil in My sight by not obeying My voice, then I will think better of the good with which I had promised to bless it” (Jer. 18:7-10 NASB).

God sent Jonah to Nineveh to proclaim His intention to destroy them. Because they responded so penitently, God spared them His wrath.

On the other hand, God had promised Israel He would greatly bless them if they obeyed, but He also warned them what He would do if they disobeyed (Lev. 26; Deut. 28). God truly wanted to bless, but Israel was much more inclined to rebel. God then had to do what He said He would do, and they suffered greatly for their stubborn refusal.

So what can we who are Christians do for our beloved nation?

1. We must be lights in the dark (Phil. 2:15; Titus 2:12).

2. We must teach our children (Ps. 78:5-8; Eph. 6:4).

3. We must spread the gospel (Acts 26:18-20; 1 Cor. 6:9-11).

4. We must pray for our nation’s leaders (1 Tim. 2:1-4).

As John Gipson so well stated, “Mark it down. Our respect, or disrespect, for the laws of God will determine the future of the United States of America.” (“A Nation Under God?” Windsong Notes, bulletin of the Windsong Church of Christ, Maumelle, AR, 7-3-09)

And as George W. Bailey said, “What nation has been so mightily blessed as have we? Will God forever do so? . . . . It might be answered in three words—IT ALL DEPENDS.”
