Need a Refresher?
Can you identify with the deep longing expressed by William Cowper in his great hymn, “O for a Closer Walk with God”?
Where is the blessedness I knew when first I saw the Lord? Where is that soul-refreshing view of Jesus and His word?
How easy it is to allow the humdrum, soul-numbing routine of everyday life to drain us of our joy. Is it possible that a good strong dose of heart-stirring awe and wonder is just what we need to renew our sagging spirits?
So let’s take a fresh look with new eyes at some of the most familiar events we find in the Bible so we can truly experience that “soul-refreshing view of Jesus and His word.”
- God’s presenting a newly-formed Eve to an awestruck Adam
- Water so deep that the tallest peaks are submerged, as well as the entire human race, with only eight survivors riding safely above the flood in a wooden vessel one-and-a-half times the length of a football field
- God’s telling a 99-year-old man that he and his 89-year-old wife will have their first baby next year
- God’s commanding that same man, years later, to sacrifice that promised son—and then waiting till the last moment to stay the knife in his hand
- A nation of some two million fugitives fleeing across a dry seabed, with water stacked up on either side, defying gravity
- A young woman being told by the angel that God’s own Son will become a baby in her virgin womb
- That same God/man, a third of a century later, dying like a criminal, though innocent of all wrongdoing, yet paying the ultimate penalty for your sins and mine
- To the utter shock of His disciples, His sudden appearance through a closed door after three days in the grave—not as a ghost, but as Living Lord, victorious over death
The same God who brought us these amazing events promises another. Someday, sooner or later, His Son will make His appearance to us. All the dead will rise. The earth will dissolve in flames. The Judgment will commence—and you and I will be there.
What a Bible we have! What a God we serve! What a glorious future awaits those who believe the Bible and obey their God!
May we be among them!
