Doctor’s Orders
Years ago we took our children to a pediatrician whose attitude was, “If you won’t do what I tell you, you can find another doctor!” Although his manner was gruff at times, he could hardly be blamed for expecting his instructions to be followed.
Jesus the Great Physician asked, “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46 NASB).
Good question! So why do so many people “talk the talk, but don’t walk the walk”? Some are unwilling to deny themselves, take up their cross and follow Him (Matthew 16:24-25). Some may be ashamed to be too closely identified with Christ for fear of persecution (Matthew 13:20-21). Still others are distracted by everyday life and fail to grow (Matthew 13:22).
Jesus taught that those who both hear and do what He says are like the builder whose house endures the storm because it has the right foundation. But those who hear His words, yet fail to act on them are foolishly building on sand—with catastrophic results when the storm hits.
So who does Jesus count as His true spiritual family? Jesus said it is “those who hear the word of God and do it” (Luke 8:21).
Hear and do. Hear and do. Nothing else will do.
