Rest Assured
Want to hear something to lift your spirits?
The night before He died, Jesus told His disciples, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful” (John 14:27 NASB).
They really needed to hear that, and so do we. What was troubling them? Jesus had just said He was going away (John 13:33). The very thought of this disturbed and frightened them (14:27-28). How could His leaving them possibly work to their advantage?
Here’s how: First, although death would take Him from them briefly, He would see them again, and they would rejoice (14:18-19; 16:16-22). Second, after returning to the Father, He would send them the abiding help of the Holy Spirit (14:26; 15:26-27; 16:5-15). And third, He will someday come and take them to the place He would prepare for them (14:1-3).
Though we’ve never seen Jesus, we believe. Like those first disciples, we look forward to His coming and taking us home.
How we need these reassuring words, “Let not your hearts be troubled.” The stronger our faith, the less we fret.
“These things I have spoken to you,” He said, “so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
