Why Pray?
It takes faith to pray. Here we are on earth trying to communicate with One “who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see” (1 Timothy 6:16 NASB).
It takes faith to pray and keep praying when we cry for help, and He seems so far away and so terribly silent. Does He really hear us? Does He even care?
The question is not whether God exists. Most people accept that. The question is: Is He available, approachable, and inclined to help? What assurance do we have that we are not just wasting our time when we pray? How do we know if prayer does any good at all? If He already knows our hearts, why pray?
The Scriptures are full of reassurances on this point. The Bible repeatedly affirms it over and over: Pray! He is listening. He does care! He is a Father who truly wants to hear from His children. He will indeed grant our requests that are in harmony with His will. We are definitely the richer for praying, and the poorer for not praying.
The great men of the Bible were men of fervent prayer: Abraham, Moses, David, Daniel, Paul, and many others. They discovered in their own personal experience that there is power in communicating with a God who is both willing and able to help. “The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much” (James 5:16b).
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:15-16 KJV).
Amen! Lord, we believe; help our unbelief (Mark 9:24).
